One of the most beautiful cities of the Peloponnese well and the whole of Greece, Nafplio – first capital of the newly formed Greek state from 1823 to 1834 – was built in accordance with the mythology from Nafplio, the son of Poseidon and of Ammonia Anymonis .
The cultural chain starts from prehistory ∙ participated in the Argonauts and the Trojan War ∙ declined in Roman times and recovered the Byzantine ∙ Franks, Venetians and Turks left their marks on the city. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments, statues, Ottoman fountains, Venetian and neoclassical buildings – all fascinating historical and architectural gems – reserve grand welcome visitors.
In the heart of Nafplio is the Italian style Constitution Square full of monuments and historic buildings. Distinguish the two Turkish mosques -in one, which now serves as cinema , housed the first school while the other met the First Greek Parliament, the Archaeological Museum with rare value exhibits prehistoric and Mycenaean period and the Municipal Gallery. Very close , toward the modern city is the church of St. Spyridon, known point of the murder of the first governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias, and the church of St. George with important icons and frescoes , such as the copy of the ” Last Supper ” by Leonardo da Vinci.
On the outskirts of Palamidi crowning the Old Town, lies the rocky peninsula Acronafplia known by the Turkish name of Its Kale ( = interior castle ). Inhabited since prehistoric times, soil consists of three levels to which a system is developed three independent castle with the oldest west, where in ancient times was the acropolis fortified with a polygonal cyclopean wall.
Interesting point in Nafplion, is the photographed Bourtzi fortress built on the island of St. Theodore. Previously, on Venetians united with Akronafplia with a huge chain that barred the entrance of the port offering the city the protection of enemy ships . In the early 1860s , the Bourtzi was residence of the executioners performing their convic s Palamidi. Visit by boat leaving -during the summer- front of the port and enjoy, if you’re lucky , some of the many cultural events organized here.
